Spotlight OS X underused substitute accepts learned some new tricks arriving more herculean than ever.
In previous versions of OS X Spotlight was limited to the surfacing documents contacts and launching apps. Actually there was more to that just the additional functionality wasn't readily apparent.

With OS X 10.10 Yosemite Spotlight is seeing a major upgrade making universal search front and the center.

To activate Spotlight press the Command and Space keys concurrently (you can as well click with the magnifying glass in the menu bar). A white bar will appear midmost by the screen awaiting your input.

When you begin typing Spotlight will start filtering results listed by category below the text fields. The left side of the result will display the assorted option which you can so select and previews to the right.

You canful as well now use Spotlight as an calculator or use it to convert various measurements.
Perhaps the most interesting new feature set of Spotlight is the ability to search the Internet without 1st having to launch your browser. Spotlights now surface relevant Wikipedia page along with the item from your personal bookmarks and history suggested site Maps result and the even Bing search result.

Going even further you can now use Spotlight to search content listed in iTunes or including music or movies and the apps. Granted you'll still need to launch iTunes so to actually purchase said content butut least you can read on an item directly in

To edit and tweak the order of categories that results are displayed for go to System Preferences > Spotlight. Drag and drop to rearrange or uncheck a box to remove it from possible results.
